The MEF provides a range of training and development opportunities, which includes support to the Slater Fund for rating to officer training.
The Slater Fund offers awards of up to £18,500 to Merchant Navy ratings, electro-technical officers or yacht crew considering career progression. The money can be used towards the costs of any necessary full – or part-time – education, and to provide some financial support during college time for those off pay.
Bursaries to Shipping Companies to Develop and Provide Rating Apprenticeship Programmes
The MEF are offering bursaries to shipping companies who employ UK rating apprentices.
The new ‘Ratings Apprenticeship’ is a programme designed to draw fresh talent into the shipping industry. Motivated and loyal crew, trained to company specific requirements, not only reduces skills shortages but can minimise staff turnover and workplace accidents, and can increase productivity within your company.
Please note, the MEF apprenticeship bursary cannot be claimed in instances where an individual has already been working at sea, in any sector, in any capacity

Grant Funding to Ratings to Update Their Certificates
The STCW Convention 1978 has been amended by the 2010 Manila Amendments and contains new requirements for all seafarers. Seafarers are required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standards of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities regarding emergency, occupational safety and survival functions.
The MEF offers individual funding support to ratings to update their certification where other means are not available, through specific grant allocations. Please click here for more information on grants for unemployed ratings to update seafaring certification, and for an application form.
