South Shields Marine School
The Maritime Growth Study 2015 indicated a lack of awareness in the UK of the importance of the maritime sector to everyday living, and many young people in the UK have little idea of the breadth of career opportunities that exist across the maritime sector. In response to this the Maritime Educational Foundation has funded the creation of a fun and interactive e-learning resource for all primary schools in the UK created by South Shields Marine School to raise awareness of the maritime industry to the primary sector.
Fleetwood Nautical Campus – Blackpool and the Fylde College.
MEF fund a piece of machinery within anew Marine Engineering Centre (MEC) that is being built at Fleetwood Nautical Campus, which will provide purpose built training facilities for marine engineers.
Both the design and fitting out of the MEC has involved a high level of employer engagement, with certain pieces of machinery for training purposes being donated by industry by companies such as PNTL, BP and SERCO.
As part of the equipment within the MEC a crane will be required to enable pieces of machinery to be moved around the facility, in a realistic maritime workplace environment.
The crane could not be donated from industry as it needed to be specifically designed to fit within the new building and meet stringent H&S requirements.
The crane will be used to advance education and training in maritime skills as it will be used by all marine engineers on L3/HNC/HND and FD marine engineering program during both their main curriculum and also during additional workshop skills to meet STCW requirements.
